Re: Dedicated Translation Help Thread

Both of those would work for me. I would definitely use tion at the beginning as well, for clarity.

Re: Haar Internationale

Interesting. It's been a little while since I've been here, so I'll have to look through it, but I'll see if anything stands out to me that's clunky.

Re: The Mando'a Bible Translation Project

Heh. I use Mando'a cusswords as everyday 'swearing lite' and always forget some people can understand 'em. Your v. 6 isn't quite right... it's passive-voice in the Bible (shall be filled) but Mando'a doesn't support that (argh) so if you could clarify who's doing the filling that'd be awesome. :) B...

As far as I can tell, it says "Mandalorian".

Re: Pronunciation?

Not sure about jorso'ran, but I always figured that kar'ta was because it might have been pronounced that way once, but that it softened over time. Try saying it fast without the 'o' sound, but keeping the rest of the pronunciation. There's a soft vowel sound in there.

I would use Pare or Ke'pare for stay, and 'Gev!' for stop.

I always felt there was a little bit of feudal Japanese influence, but that might just be Star Wars in general.

The first thing that stands out to me is how many double vowels there are.

Re: A collection of Mando'a courses and resources I have cre

Overall I think it looks good, but I do have a question. You have put the pronunciation of -oa as 'ah'. That would then mean that 'mando'a' would be pronounced 'mandah'. Not sure if I'm sold on that as a solid pronunciation. :)

Other than that it looks good to me as an introduction!

Re: Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis

I'm personally a fan of the cyclic view myself. So looking at the themes in these answers, and considering the concept of the Manda, I'm seeing their culture as one where individuals see themselves as part of a system and can't divorce themselves from that idea that their actions influence others. ...

Re: How would I say Hunter?

Arla as a boy's name doesn't sound that off to me, really. Or at all, honestly. Reason probably being that I know Pali, a language where both male and female names can end in "a". So like Mara is a name that would read to many as a woman's name, but I read it initially as a man's name because in Pa...

Re: Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis

Well, at least based on Fi's experience, they seem pretty caring with people with mental disabilities. Not sure how far that extends, but it's certainlly not a cold shoulder. I mean more their models for mental illness and what sorts of disorders their culture experiences. For example, PTSD. This i...

Re: Words i accumulated or invented so far

I've taken to counting my karate reps in Mando'a, much to my teacher's confusion (tho' he did end up saying tug'yc instead of moichido today, I'm calling that a win), and can confirm - no, ra'shya does not sound even a tiny bit like rayshe'a. For one thing the emphasis is in a different place: RA-s...

Re: Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis

For Modern mandos i.e. movie times, I would say they were mostly collective. They have some individuals who branch out on their own, but the majority of them seem to value a collective spirit. This makes sense to me, because if you're a soldier then it really helps to have a small army comprised of ...

Re: Applying Our Culture Practically

Since the armour thing seems to be a recurring trend, I'd like to say something: mirshe'beskar'gam. Personally, I've always felt like part of being a Mandalorian would be more in a state of mind than body. Being present in the moment, knowing who you are and what you stand for, using your head as m...
