Re: Costuming

I am working on a set to becoime an official Merc. It came as an afterthought to likeing Mando'a and there is some - discussion as to it's merit. I love it to pieces anyway and can't wait to troop with it again. (with upgrades!) http://i303.photobucket.com/albums/nn128/wuehlkuschler/Armour/0089.jpg ...

Re: Epa, tra'cya bal ba'slana the Mando way

I think in written language questions marks make sense regardless of markers like 'tion'. It's an opric device showing there's a question ahead.
But that could be only me. I like punctuation. I made a point of learning the correct use of a semicolon; it was not easy. ;)

Re: Epa, tra'cya bal ba'slana the Mando way

Actually, this "problem" is also the solution to many translating problems. Actually, it is not. :P Yes, the idioms are different, and it's about translating the emaning but not the words. Maybe they are a bad example. Looking up 'fixed expressions' shows me they're the wrong label too. Gah, wished...

Re: Epa, tra'cya bal ba'slana the Mando way

Not sure how pronuncaiation came up, but I'll try to answer the questions. Yes, there is a loss - or rather a difference - depending on whether I translate into Englich or German from Mando. I can use the current file just fine ebcause I am well-acquainted with English pronunciation. For German you ...

Re: List of Custom Words

I vote we take up tra'cyar - to fire in the list.
In the dictionary it is included in the expression Tra'cyar mav - Fire at will.

I think it fits in neatly with the other tracyn base words and is a useful expansion. Or I am too stupid to find the word for to shoot/to fire. :'(

Epa, tra'cya bal ba'slana the Mando way

Did anybody ever wonder about punctuation in Mando? O.O Even if it is mostly a spoken language, we have no choice but to write it. How do we use punctuation? The Englosh way (does anybody get the rules for that, eh?) or do we simply rely on the full stop and question mark to solve all problems? :( I...

Re: Creating new words, yay or nay?

Since tehre simply isn't much diction in Mando'a, I'd say we try for a word-oder based grammar. The problem I see is that we base it on English word order. English idioms are translated word by word, as are compunds and fixed expression. The difference between 'look for' and 'look after' in Mando wo...

Re: Creating new words, yay or nay?

The idea is that a wordform is defined by the way the word is used. A little like verb/nouns in English. Look at 'shot'. It can be a verb or a noun, we can glean that from the context. The idea is to create rules of context that allow us to use verbs as nouns. It is then a second question which form...

Re: Creating new words, yay or nay?

If you take the final 'r' of any verb it just turns the infinitive into present tense. So you'd say: I track Kal -> Ni striili Kal I want to track Kal -> Ni vaabi striilir Kal. Or that's my interpretation. If you want to use the verb as nominalisated form, I am not sure if it would be more intuitive...

Re: Creating new words, yay or nay?

The use of words could be very different. Look at Japanese. Depending on the way you use a word can mean anything from 'to sing', 'singing' or even 'song'. It takes time to learn - and of course stays ambiguous at the best of times. Particles might ablos be of help. If you use something that is actu...
