Mandalorian Christmas Carols

Unread post by Lyat'aag » 18 Nov 2011 17:54

Year after year, I work on these, but normally I'm only in the mood during the holiday season. I started on "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" some time ago, but recently have discovered that "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" really lends itself to Mando'a type language.

It would probably go faster if we worked on them together. Here's what I've got so far.

Udesii, Mando'ade:
Spoiler: show
God rest ye merry, gentlemen
Let nothing you dismay
Remember, Christ, our Saviour
Was born on Christmas day
To save us all from Satan's power
When we were gone astray
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

Udesii, mando'ade
Dumi naas nugett'se
Partayli meg Mhor Mand'alor
Goten bat ibi'tuur
Alori mhi an lo akaan
Bal kyr'am bah Jetii.
O Din'kartay be aay'han b'akaan
Bal Shereshoy
O Din'kartay be aay'han b'akaan

---

In Bethlehem, in Israel,
This blessed Babe was born
And laid within a manger
Upon this blessed morn
The which His Mother Mary
Did nothing take in scorn
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

O'r Keldabe, bat Manda'yaim
Ibic ik'aad gaanla
Buir echoy'la wer'cuy
Vaal kaysh n'su goten
Kaysh nuhoyi o'r beskar'gam
Cabuor teh ciryc
O Din'kartay be aay'han b'akaan
Bal Shereshoy
O Din'kartay be aay'han b'akaan

---

From God our Heavenly Father
A blessed Angel came;
And unto certain Shepherds
Brought tidings of the same:
How that in Bethlehem was born
The Son of God by Name.
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

Teh Ka'ra cuun Manda'la* Buir
Ad ti miit olaro
Bal at hayc vhette nuhoyi
Ru'jori ke'gyce
Megin o'r Keldabe goten
Cuun Mand'alor de Gai
O Din'kartay be aay'han b'akaan
Bal Shereshoy
O Din'kartay be aay'han b'akaan

*Had to cheat here to keep meter. I drop the "ah" from "mand-ah-la". However, in the original song, they shortened, "heavenly" to "heavnly" so I feel it's fair.

---

Now to the Lord sing praises
All you within this place
And with true love and brotherhood
Each other now embrace
This holy tide of Christmas
All other doth deface
O tidings of comfort and joy,
Comfort and joy
O tidings of comfort and joy

Jii at Mand'alor juri...
An gar o'r ibic taap
Bal ti jatne manda bal vodyc
Solus ashi tayli
Ibic... d'akaan
An ashi ...
O Din'kartay be aay'han b'akaan
Bal Shereshoy
O Din'kartay be aay'han b'akaan
^Had to change the story a bit because the Mando's don't know the story of Jesus at all and don't talk about it, much less sing about it. But that's what I got.

K'olar, K'olar, Mand'alor Ti Mhi:
Spoiler: show
O come, O come, Emmanuel
And ransom captive Israel
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear

K'olar, K'olar, Mand'alor Ti Mhi
Bal k'alori gar Mando'ade
Meg echoyli bal dar'manda olar
Akay projor Mand'alor olaro

---

Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.

Oya! Oya! Mand'alor ti mhi
Ven olaro bah gar, Mando'ade

---

O come Thou Dayspring, come and cheer
Our Spirits by thine advent here
And drive away the shades of night
And pierce the clouds and bring us light.

K'olar Vaar'tur, k'olar alori
Cuun Runi de gar Yaim'ol olar
Bal k'akaani prudiise be ca
Bal kadiili tra bal...

---

O come, Desire of Nations, bind
All people in one heart and mind.
Bid envy, strife, and quarrel cease.
Fill all the world with heaven's peace.

K'olar, Copad b'Uvete, shukala
An adate o'r kar'ta bal runi.

That is some very good work -- you even kept the meter in the verse. O.O

From my end the spoiler things seem to be working. The entire section is obscured in black until I click the [reveal] link.

I expected the spoiler tags to collapse to save space, which was the main point. Also, it doesn't black out anything for me.

Good point. That is normally how other forum spoiler tags work. I'll find a solution.

I'm confused as to why the spoiler only blacks out for me and not for you. What browser are you on? Ah, well, I'm sure it'll be a moot point once I replace the spoiler functionality.

currently using chrome, but I recently switched. Was originally using Firefox.

I run on Linux, Ubuntu 10.10, if that helps.

Fixed it. Sorry I had to mess with your post, but when I installed the new plugin, it didn't work. I had to edit the post and resubmit the changes for it to work.

While you did that, I got more work done on both songs. Neither is complete yet, but both are closing in on the final pieces.

Thinking about working on We Three Kings and Rudolph the Red Nose Raindeer.

The really tricky thing about all this is that there's no myths of Jesus' birth or Santa in Mandalorian culture, so we have to pretty much tell stories about previous Mandalores or wars.

Not too hard to change things, but I think Santa is basically a Mandalore who brought a time of great prosperity with lots of room for improvements on technology, weapons, and armor. Rudolph is likely the spaceship he owned at one point. Perhaps Santa is the myth of the Mandalore to discover the refining of Mandalorian Iron.

Jesus isn't too hard. The entire concept of Jesus Christmas myths revolve around the babe-who-would-be-king being born under the most difficult of circumstances into a world needing salvation from his hands. Most any Mandalore could fit this story so long as their birth is spectacular.

I'm open for taking requests if people would like, but I can't guarantee that it would get done this year.

The glowing nose could be some kind of laser cannons or torpedos. :P

Why not take Te Solus Mand'alor? If you want ahistoric figure who was at the beggining and done best for the people i doubt there's a better candidate.
