Questions on Tattoos, hair, make up, and jewelry

Unread post by aeurquhart » 11 Nov 2025 03:53

Hi! Not sure if this has been answered else where but if it has please direct me to it!

So, obviously, Mandalorian culture is pretty utilitarian in nature, but they still love armor customization, which leads me to ask question about other customizations:

Tattoos: I can't find many canon examples of tattoos but do they treat their skin like their armor? Most examples I could find, it seemed like they had one tattoo.

Hair: it seems that most Mandalorian women keep their hair short (most likely to prevent it being pulled? or be bothersome while wearing a helmet?) and the few times I've seen women with long hair, they style it so it's kept close to the head (thinking of Koska Reeves). Are there uniquely Mandalorian hairstyles that are common for longer hair (like how Koska styles hers)?

Make up: I can't really imagine Mandalorians wearing make up but figured I'd ask: if they did, what does it look like?

Lastly, jewelry: what kind of jewelry did they have? I know from The Mandalorian, Din Djarin has a Mythosaur pendant that he gives to Grogu, but are there any other things that Mandalorians would wear as necklaces?

Thanks in advance!

There's several examples of people with tattoos, and much like the armor itself, it seems the focus is often more about individual preference than any specific or regimented fashion there.

I've never heard of any detailed descriptions of Mandalorian hairstyles, the most I've seen is just the general use of braiding to prevent hair from becoming a problem under the helmet. Many different forms of braid have been depicted.

Makeup is something that's not come up, to my knowledge, and I expect it wouldn't play nicely with a helmet in general, but were it relevant I would guess it would be treated much like tattoos in the sense of not having a strict formatted expectation. More generally, I would expect many Mandalorians to find makeup rather odd and I doubt it would be a widespread thing.

For jewelry, again, there's not a lot of specific information. There's mention of, if giving a ring to someone, using flush settings for any stones so they can be worn under gloves with less inconvenience/risk of injury, and that Mandalorians who choose to wear piercings would preferentially remove them before a fight. The exact style used varies widely, such as Novoc Vevut having several gold rings around his dreadlocks.

HI! I know I'm late to the party, but I did remember Parja, Fi's wife in the books, being described as having red beads in her braids, which fell below her helmet. So they do have concepts of personal ornamentation, but like Vlet said, practicality probably overrides all else.
I can't imagine Mandos having a dress code either, apart from wear your armor . . .
Not sure it counts as makeup, but grease paint does have a long standing among special forces of our own day. I could see Mando'ade using it, or maybe using it to paint symbols on themselves from time to time--like a removable tattoo. Maybe symbols of vengeance, or family, or death, or victory . . . what are you fixin' to fight for? If you have it on your face but covered by your helmet, it's who you are, but you're keeping it close to your chest. More of a personal statement than anything else. If that makes any sense.
In my defense, I haven't finished my first cup of coffee yet.
