As I mentioned on the other Bible thread, I'd been translating solo until I found this board.
Starting from the first chapter of Genesis (I'm not sure what version of text I'm using, but it doesn't seem to be the New International Version or the King James Version), here's what I've got so far.
I'll be posting one chapter each week for now, because I'd really like feedback on grammar and vocabulary. Especially vocabulary. Kinda had to stretch the meanings of some words to get by in some places.
Verses are numbered, and standard English punctuation is used.

my thoughts/questions/suggestions
  • "Ru" is a prefix, so "said", for example, would be "ru'sirbu."
    Verse 2, you said 'sky,' I believe you meant 'earth?'
    Not a huge fan of "dar'tomel", mostly because "dar'tome" means seperation of people. possibly "dar'sol"
    "Sho", you mean ocean I assume?
    Instead of "nau'ika", you could use "kih'shya nau", "smaller light", if you want
    What do you mean by "Oya'lade"?
    "bal ru'cuy", "and was", sounds a lil strange to me.
Can you find out what translation you're using? Just so I can see your actual word choice.
I think there were one or two times you added or dropped and "-r" ending.
Other than that, I suggest not using the name "manda" for "God", as manda is its own concept.

All I can think of for now :P

Well, I did say my grammar was shaky.
If "ru'sirbu" is more acceptable than "ru sirbu", then I'm fine with that, and will edit to that effect. I had changed it around a couple of times because I wasn't sure.
For verse 2, I used "tra" in the sense of space, or the Void, instead of sky. For further differentiation, "laamyc'tra" is heaven (or high-sky) and "diryc'vheh" is earth (or low-earth, to be different from ordinary ground or soil). Also, "diryc'pirun" is deep water (low-water).
"Dar'sol" sounds good, but then we need a verb form for the same sentence. "Dar'soler/Dar'solir", maybe?
"Sho" is indeed ocean, and thank you for "kih'shya nau", I could not find an appropriate word for "small light".
"Oya'lade" is a general term for living things, literally translated as life-children.
"Bal ru cuy" because from what I understand, pronouns tend to be left out in speech and just implied unless context is unclear and demands it. "Bal bic ru'cuy" may be more acceptable as "And it was so."
I'll stick with "Manda" as "God" for now, because this will probably take some discussion, but if anyone disagrees with using "Manda" as "God", please treat it as a placeholder for now, until a more appropriate fanon term can be decided on. Thanks.

I still don't know what version of text I have, so to save time, I will post bilingual for easy reference.
[EDIT] Found it. It's an older edition of the New International Version, from somewhere in the 70s or 80s. I will still post bilingual anyway.

Genesis 2
 1 Thus the heavens and the earth were completed in all their vast array.
 2 By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. 3 And God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.

Adam and Eve
 4 This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created.
      When the LORD God made the earth and the heavens- 5 and no shrub of the field had yet appeared on the earth and no plant of the field had yet sprung up, for the LORD God had not sent rain on the earth and there was no man to work the ground, 6 but streams came up from the earth and watered the whole surface of the ground- 7 the LORD God formed the man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.
 8 Now the LORD God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden; and there he put the man he had formed. 9 And the LORD God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground—trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food. I think this is a great idea, though I'm not yet skilled enough in the language to actually provide any good feedback, I'd be happy to once I get better at the language, I'd love to have my Bible be completely written in Mando'a.

8 Now Cain said to his brother Abel, "Let's go out to the field." And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother Abel and killed him.

Other than that, I suggest not using the name "manda" for "God", as manda is its own concept.
I started on the New Testament in Romans, my favorite book. When I saw this^ I tried to figure out another word to use.

These are a few new words I tried to create.
God- Te'Solus
Spirit- Te'Spirit
Jesus- Je'sus
Christ- Krayst
apostle (and variations)- shekem'ayst
to call- sirbaynur (so for called would be vensirbayn)

I figured with every language and translation that in order to get the message across it's not necessarily word for word translation but more of translating the idea. I hope this worked. I spent about 2 hrs on it late last night, so I might have been too tired to get this completely right.

I was working on a Bible translation of my own when I came across this thread, and noticed that there was some debate over the word that should be used to mean God. I've been using Al'alor, a compounding of Alor and alor (there is a difference on the dictionary), for God, and I think it fits quite nicely. My reasoning is that somewhere in the Bible (not 100% sure where), it calls the Lord the "King of Kings", and Al'alor translates literally to Chancellor's leader. Anyways, that's my idea on that. I welcome any responses, good or bad, as I've less hold on even the basics of Mando'a than a thermal detonator.

I'm glad to see that there's been activity on the board while I've been gone, and a little surprised that I didn't get any email notifications about it.
Ah well.

I quite like Te'Solus as the translation for God as it fits well with a lot of subsequent scripture, and Al'alor is then appropriate for a context where King of Kings or some variant thereof becomes necessary. Te'Runi is also great.

I've been working on Psalms and Revelations on the side, and ended up transliterating Jesus Christ as Jisus Kraist, as I thought about the way Mando'a is pronounced when using the English alphabet and concluded that the 'e' in Jesus would be pronounced as "eh" rather than "ee". As for Krayst, the "ay" diphthong would end up sounding like the English "crate" with an 's' in it.

Ro'jage - I see what you did there. I don't know if it'll stick, but it is pretty funny. :thumbup:

Naux2010, if "sirbaynur" is the infinitive then the past tense "called" would be "ru'sirbayn" as "ven" is the future prefix. (AFAIK)
So far, I've been using "gaigotalur" (to designate) as a synonym for naming or calling.

And as I said much earlier, I'm only using "Manda" as a placeholder for wherever "God" appears in the text, and when a fanon term can be collectively agreed on, I'll just Ctrl-F and fix the translations. :D

Chapter 7 of Genesis is still in the works, and if there are any interested Mando'ade reading this, I'd very much like to get a collaboration going, with people working on separate chapters or books in coordination and covering more ground that way. I'd like Mando'a to grow as a language to an extent comparable to Star Trek's Klingon, especially since it's a language that can be spoken by us humans.

I'm all for working together to get the Bible translated into Mando'a. I guess I'll get started on the book of Job when I get the chance. Any objections?

EDIT 2.0: Ner ca'nara ori yaihi'l. Nuliser miit'gaanar ner hokaanir. Someone please tell me if I got that right? (Intended English meaning just in case: "My time has become very full. Unable unable to write my part." I used hokaanir because I couldn't find a word for part, and it seemed to fit the part well enough.)
